Flint River Council Staff Changes

We are experiencing changes at the Flint River Council and are excited to share the news with you!

Jared Young joins his family business

Jared Young is leaving August 1 to join his father's company on the north side of Atlanta. Jared has done an outstanding job serving young people for 10 summers in some capacity at a Scout Camp, the last two years as our camp director. Jared did a great job with summer camp programs; he will be missed! Many parts of our program have grown under Jared's leadership. Please join us in wishing Jared well in this new adventure!

Jason Gill opens company

At this time, Jason Gill has made the decision to open his own company and return to the field of CAD/CAM design. Jason will continue working with the Flint River Council in a part time capacity so we will still have the benefit of his knowledge and excellent customer service. We wish Jason the best with his new venture and look forward to his continued support of all of the Scouts in the Flint River Council.

Laura Lovell Interim Camp Director

Laura Lovell will be moving from a part time reservation clerk to interim Camp Director August 1. Laura's years of experience as a volunteer in the Fayette District as well as the past year working with the Camping Department made her an excellent choice to help the camping department move forward amid the current changes. Laura is looking forward to the opportunity to work with all of the volunteers in the Flint River Council and to spending time improving the already strong programming at Lawhorn Scouting Base. Please join us in welcoming Laura to this new role!

Changes announced last month

Last month, we also announced the pending retirement of Cindy Plaisance, our office manager and longest tenured employee (33 years). Cindy will retire effective October 1. Cindy McLeroy (formerly Schuchardt) and current Fayette District Executive will be promoted to office manager. Finally, Danny McCranie, Development Executive, will be moving to the Fayette District as District Executive effective September.

ScoutParents Are Now To Officially Register

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the protection of youth in our programs, the designation of parents of youth members in traditional programs as ScoutParents ended effective July 1. Councils are encouraging current ScoutParents to now officially register as dues-paying adult volunteers or leaders if they are not already.

Like all BSA adult positions, this new role will require a criminal background check and the completion of Youth Protection training.

The Hornaday Award

The Hornaday Award is the foremost conservation award in the Scouting program. Six Scouts and four volunteers have been recognized with a Hornaday Badge in the Flint River Council since 2010. Units also have an opportunity to earn a recognition for conservation service.

If a Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer is interested in the Hornaday Award program, the following steps should be taken PRIOR to beginning with any work outside of the Merit Badge requirements:

  1. Read all information regarding the requirements and expectations on the National BSA Hornaday webpage.

  2. Contact the Council Conservation Committee, Keith Larson at 678-525-7713 or keith_larson@bellsouth.net
