Honor Guard

Honor Guard Program

This program has been created to encourage Scouting units of all levels to develop a strong tradition of Citizenship and to be ready to be called upon at any time to provide patriotic flag ceremonies for the community. It is hoped that many units across the council will strive to become a council-designated ‘Honor Guard.’

Program Definition

The Utah National Parks Council’s Honor Guard program recognizes and rewards units who have prepared and committed themselves to provide outstanding and patriotic flag ceremonies for the community. This may include serving at: community patriotic events, governmental agency meetings, military-related events, religious functions, Scouting events and more.

To qualify as an Honor Guard unit, a Scouting Pack, Troop, Team, Crew or Post must complete:

  • Commitment to serve as an Honor Guard as requested at any site within 20 miles of their identified meeting place
  • Commitment to provide outstanding and patriotic flag ceremonies upon request (with 14 day notice)
  • Commitment to wear a full uniform as described by their Scouting unit-type
  • Complete the council-prescribed training course regarding flag ceremonies
  • Have available to them a full flag ceremony package, including as a minimum a United States Flag and a State of Utah flag, along with flag holders
  • Perform a minimum of three flag ceremonies practicing the principles learned during the council-prescribed training course.
  • Register with the council, including specifying a unit contact person

Units qualifying as an Honor Guard are eligible for:

  • Unit ribbon identifying them as an Honor Guard that they can proudly attach to their unit flag
  • Individual Honor Guard patches for each unit member (and leader)
  • Listing as a Honor Guard on the Utah National Parks Council website

Once your unit has qualified to become an Honor Guard unit, please complete the form below. A council representative will then contact you with further instructions.
