2013 National Scout Jamboree Staff Needed!

The 2013 National Jamboree, to be held in July at The Summit Bectel Reserve near Beckley, WV, still has positions open for staff members.  Included in this is the one-week option at half fee for those who cannot stay two weeks.  Youth and adults who missed out on the chance to go with a council troop should go on line right away to check out staff options.

New Sea Scout Century Uniform

The National Sea Scout Support Committee is please to introduce the New Century Universal Sea Scout Uniform ("NCUSSU").  The NCUSSU is an alternate uniform to the current adult and youth dress and work uniforms. It is intended to make it easy for members of newly formed Sea Scout Ships to outfit themselves in a Sea Scout uniform and may be chosen by any unit new or existing. When chosen by the unit, this universal uniform is worn by all youth and adult Ship members and may serve as both a dress uniform and a work uniform. The New Century Universal Sea Scout Uniform will be included in the next edition of the Sea Scout Manual, No. 33239.

Visit here to learn more about this exciting new option!

COPE News

Over a dozen people learned to COPE last month! They attended the Spring Instructor training session on March 15th-17th.  We were as lucky as last August; the weather gave us a wide range of challenges outdoors with sunburn on Saturday, frost on the tents at night, and snow during lunch on Sunday.  We now have 6 more Level 1 Instructors and 7 Assistant Instructors (under 18).

The standards for COPE have changed.  The old standards required a Director be on-site to open a course, and that Director could only be trained at National Camping School (NCS).  The new standards created a new role, Program Manager (PM), retitled "Director" as "Level 2 Instructor".  The PM can only be certified by attending NCS, but Councils will be able to train and certify both Level 1 and Level 2 instructors.  The Instructors run the program designed by the PM.  NCAC will have a PM by May of this year.

The COPE/Climbing Committee is working to schedule another Instructor session for the late August/early September time frame. Please let us know if you or anyone in your troop, crew, team, or ship would be interested in attending.

Questions about COPE should be sent through the Director for Camp Snyder, Reggie Cahoon  and CC Tony Waisanen .
Hope to see you on the COPE courses!

COMMODORE HENRY I. NYGARD SEA SCOUT REGATTA

The Annual Sea Scout Regatta will be held on May 24 to 27, 2013  at Camp Maria Retreat Center in Leonardtown, MD.   It will be attended by about 200 Sea Scouts from all over the Eastern Seaboard.   The week-end will be full of competitive events and social activities.
All Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are invited to visit or attend.   Those attending who are between the age of 14 and 21 may compete in all events.   Scouts of other ages may take part in all events except the scored events.   Some of the scored events include races in canoeing, rowing, pulling boat, sailboats, also swimming, knot tying, First Aid, Mariner Quiz, drill, heaving line, boatswain’s
chair lift, and much more.
Day visitors are welcome, bring a lunch.   Those attending for the week-end must register and pay all fees.  Contact Regatta Chair Doug Yeckley ,
410-326-429, for a Regatta Boarding Book.

NCAC POWDER HORN 2013

Come join us for the NCAC 2013 Powder Horn Training course!  Our four-day course is designed to help the troop, team, or crew by exposing older Scouts, Venturers, and adult leaders to safely conducted outdoor/high-adventure activities of a fun and challenging nature. The course provides an introduction to the resources needed to successfully lead youth through a program of outdoor adventure and is based upon giving participants an exposure to some outdoor/high-adventure activities. The course presenters are expert consultants in each outdoor high adventure activity. It is not a certification event. It is for any youth or adult interested in experiencing a unit-level, high-adventure program.

The date for the 2013 course is August 22-25, 2013  to be held at Camp Snyder in Haymarket, Virginia.

If you have any questions please contact: Steve Wolf .

Venturing at Goshen

This summer Goshen Scout Reservation will become the only camp in the country where crew members are able work on Outdoor Bronze requirements all summer long!

Nationally, less than 2% of Venturers earn advancement each year. At Goshen’s Camp Bowman on the shores of beautiful Lake Merriweather new and experienced crews can jumpstart their advancement program to join this elite group. In just two weeks, Venturers can earn the Outdoor Bronze Award and complete requirements for their Ranger, Gold and Silver Awards. Local crews have been beta-testing the program for three years now and can testify that Venturers are in for a great two weeks of fun and advancement, including the ever-popular COPE program!

Join us at Goshen next summer to take advantage of this unique opportunity and be Prepared. For Adventure.
Please read through the material here and call or email me with any questions you might have.  Gary Carroll ,
NCAC Goshen Scout Reservation Director, (301)214-9195.  In addition, we are constantly updating and adding new information that is specific to the Venturing program on our website.

Aquatics Courses
BSA Safe Swim Defense (SSD) and Safety Afloat (SA) training is required for any BSA unit conducting swimming or boating activities. Adult leaders supervising a swimming/boating activity must have completed Safe Swim Defense/Safety Afloat training within the previous two years.
SSD and SA training is available online at scouting.org. In-person training consists of viewing the SSD or SA DVD and answering the interactive questions that are part of the training. The advantage to in-person training is that questions can be asked of the facilitator.  Contact the NCAC Aquatics Committee Chair Mike Meenehan  to arrange in-person training for your Unit.
NCAC also offers this training at Pow Wow and University of Scouting. This training must be presented by qualified trainers.
