Good Turn Grave Site Decorations
On Saturday, May 23, 2009, the Boy Scouts will pay tribute to the men and women who served our country bravely by placing an American flag at each of the 138,000 graves. The opening ceremony will be at 8:30 A.M. with the check-in starting at 7:15 A.M. When you enter through the main entrance at Golden Gate National Cemetery, you will see the covered registration area on the left. Park your vehicle where directed, and proceed to the registration area. At the registration area you will be given a map of the area in which you will be placing the flags and a ticket that will be used to secure your metal pokers. Take your ticket and get your metal pokers then proceed to the ceremony area, on the left side of the hill with the large flagpole. After the opening ceremony, proceed to your area and place the flags. When you are finished with your area, please check with the volunteers, who carry the radios, to see if there is another area that needs to be covered. When you are ready to go home, check back with the registration area to check out and pick up your patches.
A second opportunity to participate will be the following Saturday May 30, 2009 beginning at 9:00 a.m. for removal of the flags. Those that participate at both placement and pickup can purchase the pin in addition to the patch.
Participation in removal only qualifies for patch.
We are offering your unit an opportunity to order patches. Please complete the patch order form below and return it to the Pacific Skyline Council, 1150 Chess Drive, Foster City, CA 94404. Orders need to be returned by Friday, May 15, 2009. Please use the form below and put in the number of participants.
Reminders: Class A uniform; bring water to drink; check in before 8:30 A.M.; and you are invited to be present at the official Memorial Day services on Monday, May 25th, 10:00 A.M..
The U.S. flags will be placed on the graves, the side with the veteran's name only, in an upright position one foot in front of and centered with the headstone or marker.
When placing the flags please be sure that the flags are in good shape. If the flags are torn or damaged, please leave those flags by the box or the roadside. Absolutely no flags are to go home.
