What is NYLT?  National Youth Leader Training (NYLT) is an intense weeklong leadership-training course for Boy Scouts.  As the third step in the Boy Scout program for youth leader development, this course provides Scouts with the leadership skills that they need to be truly effective youth leaders.  It is the most advanced youth leader training that Scouting offers at the council level.

Interaction among Scouts from all over the council is a major ingrediant in the NYLT course.  This is why this training is not provided at the unit level.  However, NYLT has been developed specifically to support the training done by the Scoutmaster in the home troop.  Sending Scouts to NYLT helps them more fully develop their leadership potential.  This results in a smoother running unit led by youth.  As a result, adults will be able to spend more of their time doing those things that they should be doing behind the scenes to improve the Scouting experience fo their Scouts.  If you troop is committed to having a truly boy-run unit, your youth leaders need the skills presented in the NYLT course.

What will Scouts get out of NYLT?  They will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of good leadership.
  • Learn the importance of forming a group into a unit that works together because they want to.
  • Learn skills related to planning, effective teaching, and training and leading a team.
  • Leave with a "Leadership Toolkit" to aid in applying these newly acquired skills back in the troop.

Which Scouts should we send?  Send the Scouts in your troop who are in leadership positions now, or who will soon be such positions.  They are the ones who can put the leadership skills that they will learn at NYLT into practice for the benefit of your unit and for themselves.

Participant requirements for NYLT:

  1. Be at least 13 years old by the start of the NYLT course.
  2. Be at least First Class.
  3. Be or will soon be a troop youth leader, including positions such as a Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, or Assistant Patrol Leader.
  4. Obtain the Scoutmaster's recommendation and parent approval.
  5. Complete a BSA Personal Health and Medical Record - Class 1 & 2.

Where will NYLT be held and what is the cost?  NYLT will be held at Henson Scout Reservation on August 2-8, 2008.  The cost of the course is $210.00, which includes all course materials, two NYLT t-shirts, food and program for the entire week.  Perhaps your troop or chartering organizations would consider contributing all or part of the course fee, since the unit will be the beneficiary of the skills and experience NYLT-trained Scouts will bring back to your unit.
