Invest in Scouting and You Will Change the World!
Years ago as a young District Executive, I was invited by Hal Walker, who served as the Council Commissioner in the Tendoy Council to evaluate my commitment to Scouting by putting it to the "Triple-T Test". Mr. Walker said, "If you want to know if you really love something or somebody put it to the test. Are you willing to share and invest your TIME, share and invest your TALENTS and share and invest your TREASURE?" Over the past 32 years I have tried very hard to share my time, talents and treasure with the Boy Scouts of America. I believe that we can make no greater INVESTMENT that has the greatest net return than with the YOUTH of today who will become the LEADERS of tomorrow.

I am encouraged by the huge potential we have to impact the lives the young people who participate in a quality Scouting program. History has noted that in times of economic turmoil and recession periods, the Boy Scouts of America does very well. Families are more inclined to do activities together and to support causes that they believe align with their core values. Families increase their support to programs and organizations that they believe make a difference in the quality of life that they desire for their children. So it is with Scouting in the Chief Seattle Council — We find a greater number of youth participating with an increased level of parental involvement and we look forward to an incredibly dynamic year of Scouting in the year 2009.

I have made a few recent observations of this involvement. In the interest of brevity, I will be spanning several issues of the eTotem.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a wonderful Blue and Gold banquet with the Scouts, leaders and family members (and even a number of grandparents) from Pack 559 in Bothell, Washington. It was an exciting evening of Cub Scout participation and recognition. It was thrilling to watch as 39 uniformed Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Webelos were honored for their hard work and achievement. Tom and Liz Fuglestad were thanked and recognized for their year of service as the Cubmaster and Committee Chair. The responsibility of leadership was handed over to willing, capable and trained leaders.

The highlight of the night was the recognition of 7 Webelos Scouts who received the Arrow of Light Award. All 7 Scouts crossed over the bridge from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting and were welcomed to the new Troop by a new Scoutmaster and youthful Scout leaders. The old Webelos neckerchief was removed and new Troop neckerchief took its place around each Scout's neck. I couldn't help but believe that someday these seven boys could be honored with their Eagle Scout badges. Equally important was the thought of seven new Scouts who will live their daily lives by the values found in the Scout Oath, Law, motto and slogan. A new adventure is about to begin! Pack 559 has made an INVESTMENT in the FUTURE LEADERS of tomorrow.

Meet 9/11 Hero at Eagle Banquet
The 48th Eagle Scout Recognition Banquet will be held at Museum of Flight on Thursday, May 28, 2009 between 6:30 and 9:00 PM. These new Eagles will have the opportunity to attend the banquet for FREE – thanks to other Eagles and businesses that will serve as sponsors. Parents and guests will be able to attend a special lower cost reception. Invitations coming soon.

Scott Strauss, an Eagle Scout and 9/11 hero is the keynote speaker at the Eagle Banquet. A member of the Emergency Service Unit of the New York City Police Department, Strauss and others risked their lives to rescue two Port Authority Police officers from the rubbles of the World Trade Center during the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The council is calling out to all past Eagles from the area to join the celebrations and make it a Gathering of Eagles. If you would like to sponsor a new Eagle Scout over dinner or, as a past Eagle would like to attend the Eagle reception, please call Keka Majumdar at 206-902-2329 or email at kmajumdar@seattlebsa.org to make reservations. Reservations are required in advance. Deadline is Friday May 22, 2009.

Scouting Hall of Fame...Who Will You Nominate??

The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is a one-time opportunity to recognize extraordinary individuals for the differences they make though their leadership. It is a simple but high-impact program that demonstrates how leadership changes lives.

Nominees must be living Scouts, Scouters, or volunteers who have served in that role for at least one year. There are no age requirements, and adult nominees do not need to be currently registered with the BSA. All adult nominees must have served or be currently serving as a Scouting volunteer. All youth nominees must be registered members of the BSA.

From Feb. 8, 2009 — our 99th anniversary — and continuing through Aug. 31, 2009, people will submit nominations through the 100th Anniversary Web site: www.scouting.org/100years.

A total of 305 honored individuals — one national and one for each council—will be inductedinto the 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership. Inductees will be given national recognition to commemorate their leadership and dedication to living out Scouting virtues in service to others.

National BSA has shared a little from a nomination they received for Manford Sales, a Scoutmaster who has been active in Scouting for over 60 years:

“With his understated manner, Manford leads without grand gestures. Beneath his soft-spoken demeanor is a man of faith, a man of principle, and a man of courage who has made a dramatic impact on the lives of thousands of Scouts. He has served a variety of roles within the Scouting organization, and has weathered difficult times in an urban center of Pittsburgh. Day after day, year after year, he has built young lives one at a time, for literally, a lifetime.” —    Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca

Don't delay Chief Seattle Council folks, and let the celebration begin!

Coach Sarkisian Wins Over Crowd at Downtown FOS Breakfast
The new University of Washington Head Football Coach Steve Sarkisian let the over 550 people at the Downtown Friends of Scouting Breakfast get to know him a little better. Coach Sarkisian was the keynote speaker at this annual fundraising event and took the opportunity to share his background and the foundation of his coaching philosophy. Coach was quick to point out that when he was a player at Brigham Young University he spoke of how the team didn’t have the biggest and best players in the country but they were men of character. 30 of his teammates were Eagle Scouts.

The breakfast got off to a slippery start when a surprise snow storm hit the Seattle community last Thursday causing over 100 of the expected guest to not be able to get to the event. Still those in attendance and the many corporate sponsors pledged over $200,000 in financial support to the Chief Seattle Council.

Peter Joers III, President of Bank of America – Washington was the chairman and had a great team of community leaders including Fred Grimm, Tom Pigott, Bob Ratliffe, Willie Aikens and Todd Zarfos who all pitched in to make the breakfast a success.

Scouts from Pack 15, Troop 15 and Troop 166 provide the ceremonies with Colin Chandler sounding Colors on his bugle. Life Scout Joshua Johnson and his mother Amy spoke about how Scouting has impacted their family.

Council Chairman Fred Grimm updated the crowd on the strong status of the Chief Seattle Council and its growing membership.

Those who were unable to attend and would still like to donate can do so by contacting the council’s Development Department at 206-725-5200.

You're Invited!
The Seattle Seahawks Eastside Friends of Scouting Breakfast will take place on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. Chaired by Phil Bussey, Sr. Vice President, Puget Sound Energy, the east breakfast will raise funds to support the over 37,000 youth served in the Chief Seattle Council.

The Keynote Speaker will be explorer, national luge champion and best-selling author Helen Thayer. Named by National Geographic as "One of the Great Explorers of the 20th Century", Helen was the first woman to solo to the magnetic North Pole. She has also walked across the Sahara and Gobi Dessert, kayaked the Amazon, studied wolves in the Arctic and researched pandas in Tibet.

Emceed by Andy Wappler, the program will also feature sport caster Tony Ventrella and Seattle Seahawks tight-end John Carlson. The breakfast begins at 7:00a.m. and concludes at 8:30a.m.

There is no cost to attend, but all participants must register in advance and will be asked to make a tax deductible financial contribution to Scouting. Seating is limited and reservations must be made by Friday, March 20th. If you or your company would like to help underwrite this important event, sponsorships are available starting at $2,500.

For more information on attending and sponsorships, please contact the Boy Scouts of America at 206-902-2326.

Friends of Scouting Update
Thank you to the many donors who have already contributed to the 2009 FOS campaign. Congratulations to Sinclair, Orca and Foothills Districts, who are all at 50% or more of goal!
If your pack, troop, team or crew has not finished its campaign, here are a few steps that will help you be recession proof:
  1. Promote your scheduled presentation well to achieve maximum attendance
  2. Collect donation cards that night rather than a 6 week campaign
  3. Contact alums of your unit. Several troops raise thousands from past Scouts and leaders
  4. Set a personal goal of a card returned from every family
Achieve your goal by March 31st, 2009, and your unit will receive free advancement badges through 12/31/09 or a Pinewood Derby Car for each member of your pack!

Your Retirement Can Be a Gift to Scouting
Like most individuals, you have probably given some thought to what you will do for retirement income. A lot of thought. And again, like most individuals, you probably didn't know how you could make a large gift to Scouting and get extra retirement income at the same time. But you can!

A BSA retirement trust is just a form of the popular charitable unitrust. It can be created easily with cash, stocks, bonds, or land that you already own. You place the property into the trust and receive income and tax deductions usually based on the full fair market value of the property. If your gift was appreciated property, you also avoid capital gains tax. You decide who receives the income, the amount of income, when you want to start receiving the income, and how long the trust will last. When the trust ends, the Chief Seattle Council receives the trust property.

Of course, these trusts aren't limited to retirement income. They can be created at any time, for any reason. Contact the Scout office for more information about the BSA retirement trust, and about how you, your family, and the council will all benefit. You'll see that these income trusts are a real gift to retirement planning.

Changes to United Way Giving to Boy Scouts of America
King County United Way has changed its giving policies in regards to the Boy Scouts of America. Our funding was reduced by 53% for the current fiscal year and will be reduced another 48% in the following fiscal year. This amounts to a total reduction of $249,647, or 76% over the next two years.

You can still support the Chief Seattle Council through your workplace giving. Many employers give their employees the opportunity to give to the charity of their choice. In addition to the United Way, other workplace campaigns include the Combined Federal Campaign, Employees Community Fund of the Boeing Company, and the Microsoft Giving Campaign. If you do make a gift to one of these campaigns, please consider supporting the Chief Seattle Council with a designated gift. Your continued support is appreciated!
