2012 Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner

On Wednesday, October 24th the Katahdin Area Council hosted its 17th Annual Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner where Gen. (Ret.) Nelson and Carla Durgin were recognized for their tremendous commitment and dedication to our community, state and nation.  There were almost 400 community leaders present; the dinner raised $94,000 to support local Scouting!  We are humbled by the continual support the community gives to Scouting and the Katahdin Area Council.  The Bangor Daily News did a great job reporting the event; you can find the article by click HERE.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

"Do a Good Turn Daily"

The Katahdin Area Council is currently working on a plan to revamp the Scouting for Food program for 2013.  We will be meeting with potential program sponsors over the next few weeks and hope to make a partnership and 2013 plan announcement by or before the first of the year.  We encourage each unit to support their local food pantry as some many in our communities are in need of help.  The council office will do all it can to support your campaign efforts - please talk to your local District Executive about specific help you may need

ONE OATH AND LAW

On Oct. 17, the BSA's National Executive Board approved a resolution to use the Scout Oath and Law in the Cub Scout and Venturing programs. Specifically, the changes approved are as follows:

Cub Scouts:

  • Adopt the Scout Oath and Law for use in the Cub Scout program, retiring the Cub Scout Promise.
  • Revise the Core Values of Cub Scouts to align exactly with the twelve points of the Scout Law.
  • Retire the Law of the Pack, while maintaining the concept of “Akela” as leader.
  • Maintain the current Cub Scout motto, sign, salute, and handshake.

Venturing:

  • Retire the Venturing Oath, Code, sign and salute
  • Adopt the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout sign, and Scout salute
  • Engage the task force and National Youth Cabinet to determine whether Venturing should have a differentiating motto/slogan or adopt “Be Prepared”

These changes will become effective with the release of youth handbooks and leader aids supporting this; approximately Jan. 1, 2014, for Venturing-related changes and May 15, 2015, for Cub Scout and Boy Scout-related changes.

  WELCOME NEW SCOUT FAMILIES!

WELCOME NEW SCOUT FAMILIES & LEADERS!!

Fall is an exciting time in the Katahdin Area Council!
Over 600 new Scout families join Scouting at their local school in the 6 counties that we serve. It's great to see the excitement in the eyes of boys as their parents sign them up for the experience that is Scouting.

Scouting doesn't happen without Leaders; and it's not always excitement that we see in the eyes of parents when they sign up to be new leaders! We want you to know how much we appreciate your willingness to serve as a leader in your son's Pack or Troop. We also want you to know that there are resources and people in your District and Council waiting for the opportunity to help you be successful.

NEW SUPER NOVA PROGRAM!

The Boy Scouts of America's NOVA Awards program incorporates learning with cool activities and exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers. The hope is that the requirements and activities for earning these awards stimulates interest in STEM-related fields and shows how science, technology, engineering and mathematics apply to everyday living and the world around them. Counselors and mentors help bring this engaging, contemporary, and fun program to life for youth members.
