SILVER BEAVER NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
November 3, 2009
Dear Scouters:
Annually, the Los Padres Council, Boy Scouts of America presents the Silver Beaver Award to outstanding volunteer Scouters in our Council that have rendered distinguished and exemplary service to the youth we serve and to their community. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest honor our local council can bestow upon a volunteer leader, and we may only present five awards annually. This award is presented at our Council Annual Recognition Dinner to be held on January 23, 2010.
Our purpose in writing you is to ask for you help in submitting nominations for this prestigious award. Do you know a deserving Scouter that should be nominated? We hope you do and would encourage you to take some time and fill out a nomination form and return it to us by not later than December 8, 2009. The form can be found on the council’s website www.lpcbsa.org in the forms section.
Please be as thorough as you can in your nomination and give us as much information as you can to help us in selecting deserving leaders that should be honored for their service to youth. A committee of Silver Beaver recipients will meet and review all nominations and then select the most deserving. Please do not let your nominee know that you are submitting them for the award. As we can only present 5 awards, we normally receive 10 to 15 nominations per year.
If you have any questions, or need more information about the person you may want to nominate, please contact your District Executive.
Yours in Scouting,
Sue Schuyler Lynn Johnson Ron Walsh
Council Advancement Chair Vice-President, Program Staff Advisor

CAMP USAGE FEES ADOPTED FOR
CAMP FRENCH AND RANCHO ALEGRE
At its September meeting, the Executive Board of the Los Padres Council approved the establishment of camp usage fees for units in the Los Padres Council. These fees are as follows:
- $5 per person per day
- $8 per person for two nights
These fees are in addition to the usage fees for buildings and other facilities that are currently being charged. The fees will take effect beginning October 1, 2009. This is the first time in the 15 years we have been the Los Padres Council that fees will be charged at our camps.
In considering the fees, our Board took into account the fact that Camp French operates at a loss of approximately $40,000 - $60,000 a year, and Rancho Alegre (exclusive of the Outdoor School) also operates at a similar loss. While the fees will not eliminate this loss completely, it will give us the opportunity to operate on less of a loss than we currently do.
We studied other surrounding councils and found that virtually every council in our area charges its own units and youth to use their camps. We wanted to keep the fees as reasonable as possible, and believe that these charges are still quite low compared to other councils and to state parks (which now charge $35 per night per campsite with a maximum of 8 people per site – so if you were to take your unit of 20 youth and adults to a state park for the weekend, you would incur fees of $210 (3 campsites @ $70 for two nights), while you would pay only $160 for the same two nights at either Camp French or Rancho Alegre. A bonus is that our reservation system is very user friendly and you usually get the dates you want confirmed during the same phone call!
We thank you for your understanding and support of these new fees.

Cub Scout Shooting Sports Day
We have to reschedule the Cub Scout (Wolves and Bear) Shooting Sports Day, originally scheduled for Rancho Alegre on October 24, for a later date. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please watch this newsletter and your mail for the rescheduled date of this fun, new event.
2010 Eagle Scout Scholarship Applications Are Online
Applications for Eagle Scout scholarships for 2010 are now available at www.nesa.org. We ask that your local council Web site please link back to the following URL so your Eagle Scouts who apply for a college scholarship use the correct application, which is a mandatory requirement. Incorrect applications from prior years will not be accepted. Here is that URL: http://www.nesa.org/applications.html
This year, just over 4,500 applications were received for the 109 scholarships awarded. Of those applicants, 937 used the wrong form and thus were immediately rejected. Please consider the time and effort these applicants took to complete the application and to gather reference letters, and their anticipation as they mailed their application and awaited a response. Yet the rule is that they must use the correct application. None of these applicants ever had a chance. Let's work together to help prevent this from happening again in your council.

Invest in Scouting - Change the World
2009 Friends of Scouting Campaign to Support Scouting on the Central Coast
Growing up has never been easy. Each generation faces its own concerns and pressures. For the past 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has provided young people with experiences that prepare them to meet challenges and conquer them.
Character, self-reliance, responsibility and leadership – Scouting provides activities that are in sync with the interests of today’s youth, but instill these timeless values. Annually, for more than 9,000 young people throughout the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties participants with diverse backgrounds, Scouting is the guiding light that leads to a responsible and rewarding adulthood.
Friends of Scouting is the annual fundraising campaign to raise the operating funds necessary to provide a quality Scouting program in the Los Padres Council. This campaign is divided into two separate efforts: The Family Friends of Scouting, which solicits contributions from the Scouting families and the Community Friends of Scouting, which seeks contributions from business and community leaders as well as Council Board members.
The essence of the Family Friends of Scouting campaign is raising money to help the Los Padres Council defray the actual cost of delivering and running the Scouting program. Give Scouts and volunteer Scouters your support by helping the Scouting program with your pledge.
Why should you support Scouting? Because your gift to the 2009 Friends of Scouting campaign really does invest in the future. Help us change the world by guiding the youth of this generation as they grow to become the leaders of the next.

Celebrating 100 Years - A Year of Celebration
For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, we will demonstrate the incredible impact of a century of living the Scout Law.
Program participants will earn recognition for making a difference in their communities due to their dedication to five of Scouting’s core values: Leadership, Character, Community Service, Achievement, and the Outdoors. Participants will be able to earn our 100th Anniversary commemorative patch.
A Year of Celebration will take place from September 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Scouting alumni. Read the patch requirements to learn more.
Additionally, the BSA has also teamed up with some great organizations to offer unique 100th Anniversary service projects that can apply towards your Year of Celebration Service award. These national opportunities will truly show what Scouts can do when they band together towards a shared goal.
For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, we celebrate this legacy and commit ourselves to inspire and prepare future generations.
Centennial Celebration
Next year (2010) is the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States. In addition to the National Jamboree and other special programs, the Los Padres Council is planning a number of major events to commemorate this event. During 2010 there will be a Scout-A-Rama during February in Santa Maria and a Camp-or-all in Santa Margarita in September. There will be special media coverage and local activities in each of the Districts of the Council. Keep checking the Centennial News Page for more details.
