Friday's Doubleknot News - Vol. 149 1/24/2014 WARNING: “Donation Refund” Scam Targets Nonprofits In this scam, fraudsters make large online donations with stolen credit card numbers. Then, they email or call the nonprofits to explain that they accidentally overpaid and to request a refund to a different credit card than the one that they used for the donation. If the nonprofit issues the refund, the fraudster receives the funds, and the organization and the consumer whose credit was stolen both become victims. Doubleknot software will not allow you to refund an online payment to a different credit card. However, it’s important to make sure that your staff is aware that they should never refund online donations using another card or method. These guidelines can help your organization avoid becoming a victim of this scam: -
Never refund money to a different bank or card than the one used in the original transaction. -
Never reimburse donors by wire transfer, money order, prepaid debit card, or cash. -
If you receive a donation that’s unusually large or outside your geographical region, establish the identity of the donor and the legitimacy of the donation before you issue any refund or use the funds for any purpose.
