Heard Scout Pueblo

The Heard Scout Pueblo is located at 1901 East Dobbins Road (20th Street, one mile south of Baseline Road) in Phoenix, and the adventure begins at the entry. Reflecting the old Southwest atmosphere of the area and the camp itself, the adobe style architecture of the entry way is reflected throughout the camp. Heard Scout Pueblo is named for the Heard family, who donated the property to Boy Scouts in the late 1920`s. At the time, the Heards were the publishers of the Arizona Republic newspaper. They had also begun their collection of native Southwestern artifacts, which evolved into the Heard museum, housed in their home near Central Avenue in Phoenix. Camp Features The Heard Scout Pueblo has a wide variety of program areas for you and your Scouts. Activities range from hiking to camping, COPE, swimming, rifle shooting and archery. Facilities are available for small groups and large. Campsites A unit looking for a camping experience has many choices. The Heard Scout Pueblo can accommodate a small patrol camp-out or a large family camping experience. There are even camping sites located up in the shoulders of South Mountain. The lower campsites are generally accessable by car. Some campsites have ramadas, water and toilet facilities. Units can contact the Council`s Program Office for information on camp site availability as well as recommendations on the right campsite for your program. The remote campsites are undeveloped, with only a preset campfire ring. These sites offer a unit a remote desert camping experience literally within the center of Phoenix. You can often hear coyotes call while watching the lights of the metropolitan area. Should your unit wish to have a campfire, you will need to bring your own wood with you. There is no supply of fire wood at the Heard Scout Pueblo. Camp Site Capacities Ampitheaters There are three ampitheaters available for your use. The Norton Ampitheater is capable of holding approximately 400 hundred people and has a large stage area complete with campfire location. There is a full lighting system available. The Woodbadge Ampitheater is the smallest ampitheater, suitable for unit events such as training or small Courts of Honor, and has a capacity of 80 - 100 people. The Small Ampitheater is suitable for up to 250 people. It also has a campfire location. The Heard Scout Pueblo has a number of facilities suitable for adult and youth training as well as for group meeting. Premier among these is the Anne Forsman Center. The center consists of a large, semi-enclosed room. Folding tables and chairs are available. Space is sufficient for about 80 participants. The Center also has rest rooms and a small kitchen facility. Ramadas Throughout the Heard Scout Pueblo are a number of ramadas. Ramadas are covered areas without walls. Ramada Grande is a U-shaped facility centered around a campfire area, and contains fixed benches. It will accommodate about 150 people. The Rotary Ramada also contains a set of benches in a straight line, and will accommodate about 100 people. In addition, there are a number of other ramadas of smaller size throughout the Heard Scout Pueblo. These ramadas are designed for groups from 15 to 25 people. Compass Courses The Heard Scout Pueblo has a series of compass courses which were specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Boy Scout Second Class Award. And the compass courses are also great fun for older Scouts as well as adults. If you think these are too easy, try working them in the dark as part of your camping experience. Swimming Pool Nestled between the Pueblo building and a spur from South Mountain is the swimming pool. This junior olympic sized pool measures 75 feet by 30 feet. The pool is used during the summer Cub Scout Day Camp, and is available to others during the remainder of the year. The pool complex includes rest rooms and changing facilities, as well as fresh water showers at pool side. Groups wishing to use the pool must provide their own certified life guards and specifically schedule the pool with the Council Programs Office at 602-955-7747. Shooting Sports The Heard Scout Pueblo has a 10 position archery range and a 20 position rifle range. Both ranges are designed and used in support of the Boy Scout merit badge program and the Cub Scout sports program. The ranges are only available for use through scheduling with the Programs Office of the Council Service Center at 602-955-7747 ext 254. Use of the range is not permitted without the presence of a Council-certified Range Safety Officer. COPE Course COPE stands for "Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience". The program is designed as a fun, outdoor team-building exercise. Originally designed for corporate executives, the course tests the ability of a team to work together to solve physical problems that can not be done by a single individual alone. COPE is a structured program requiring the presence and involvement of a trained instructor. COPE is only available through scheduling with the Programs Office of the Council Service Center at 602-955-7747 ext 254. Use of the COPE facility is not permitted without the presence of a Council-certified COPE instructor. Conference FacilitiesThe Heard Scout Pueblo has an excellent set of conference facilities, centered around the Pueblo building. The Pueblo building itself is a literal jewel. The Pueblo and the Stone Lodge were built entirely by Scouting youth and adults in 1929 and 1930. The Pueblo is constructed using traditional adobe materials and techniques. The wall as are constructed of mud blocks molded on the property. The ceilings in each room are constructed of saguaro ribs supported by log beams. The Stone Lodge is constructed of rock slabs from the property. Both buildings were completed in about 18 months, and were dedicated in a ceremony on Scout Sunday in February, 1930. Pueblo Building
