The Northeast Florida United Way has informed the North
Florida Council—Boy Scouts of America, that beginning on July 1,
2009, the United Way’s support for the Council’s Positive Youth
Development Program/Scouting, as well as the ScoutReach
Program (Mohawk District), will receive a 39% decrease in United
Way support from the previous year.

In total dollars, this amounts to $147,000 less than it did in the
  previous year.

The United Way had 18% fewer dollars to contribute to agencies this year. This is due in large part to a campaign shortfall in light of the challenging economic environment we are in; as well as increased demands and needs from emergency assistance organizations. In lieu of making across-the-board funding cuts to member agencies, the United Way decided to make “strategic” reductions to its member agencies. The North Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America was identified by the United Way as an agency slated for strategic funding reductions.

United Way has encouraged the North Florida Council to make up the shortfall by reaching out to others for contributions.

We need your help! This surprising and disappointing news came with only seven days notice. In fact, thirty days prior to the funding announcement, the North Florida Council Boy Scout officials were informed by United Way officials of a possible reduction in the amount of 10% to 12%. Needless to say, the 39% reduction is far greater than what we had expected.

Your financial support in any amount would be appreciated, and may be made payable online by clicking here to DONATE NOW or mailing to North Florida Council, BSA, 521 S. Edgewood Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32205.

The North Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America is committed to offering the Scouting and Learning for Life program of the highest caliber to the greatest number of young people possible. The Council has taken steps to be thrifty during these tough economic times. The Council is committed to keeping a District Scout Executive in each District in order to provide superior service to over 6,500 volunteers who deliver positive youth development values to over 16,500 youth in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting and Venturing. The Council has placed a hiring freeze on middle management staff positions and has reduced overall expenses in order to be wise stewards of your generosity.

Thank you for your continued interest and support to help make up this shortfall of funds!
