Summer 2010 Camping Opportunities:
Lots of Changes as We Begin Our Second 100 Years

Put the Outing
in Scouting

Now that summer is over, we have begun our planning for the Summer Camp activities at Rancho Alegre and Camp French during our centennial year.  Check back on this page often as we make program announcements.

Cub Scout Day Camp - Next year's theme at all Cub Scout Day Camps will be Sports.  Help is needed in each of the Districts to make this event come off.  Check with your District Executive and let them know that you are interested in helping.

Cub and Webelos Resident Camp - Set aside July 18-21 for Wolf/Bear Cub Resident Camp and July 21-24 for Webelos Resident Camp.  More details to follow.

Boy Scout Advancement Trail Camp - Dates are July 11-17. We have a new name with plan a load of new merit badges and activities.  Some of the merit badges we plan on offering in 2010 in addition to all the Eagle Required and popular shooting sports and aquatics merit badges include Space Exploration, Weather, and Astronomy as new Nature programs. We also plan on Cinematography, Photography, and Journalism for career interest merit badges. Provided there is the promised El Nino and the lake treatment holds water, we will be offering Rowing in the Aquatics Area.  In Arts and Crafts we plan on adding Pottery (we would like to borrow a kiln for several weeks) and Metal Working. In Scoutcraft, we plan on offering Orienteering and the new Merit Badge on Geocaching. Some of the new traditions established in 2009 such as Early Morning Risers (jogging and calisthentics) and the Scoutmaster Triathalon (winner receives breakfast in bed on Saturday morning) will return.  There will also be short morning training programs for Scoutleaders who need to obtain and/or renew their certifications in basic subjects such as Youth Protection, Weather Safety, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, and Climb on Safely.

But the big addition in 2010 is our special Mountain Man Program for Scouts 14 or older (10 maximum).  In this program Scouts will develop teamwork and friendships as they work on Cycling, Backpacking, and Wilderness Survival Merit Badges. In addition, we plan on offering tomahawk throwing, black-powder shooting, Leave No Trace, and the When Help Is Delayed First Aid segment. Scouts will be cycling in the Santa Ynez Valley and go on an overnighter backpacking trip.

Summer Camp Staff Info Page - Applications for staff will be solicited shortly. We are looking for the right leaders and skills to make our Summer Camp highly successful. Staff Training is June 27 to July 2.

Tres Robles National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) - Give your youth leadership that necessary EDGE to be successful. Send them to NYLT at Camp French June 21-26. The highly successful Tres Robles Program helps boys mature and learn the skills necessary to be successful as a Senior Patrol Leader and in life.

Advanced Aquatic Skills Camp - This five day program for Scouts, Scouters, and community members (non-Scouts) gets underway on Saturday, June 12 (Ends: Wednesday, June 16). Advanced Aquatics develops candidates to become BSA/Red Cross Certified Lifeguards. Participants must be at least 15 years of age. Every Troop should have at least one certified lifeguard for troop outings.  If we have enough applicants, we will offer a later session (July 5-9) as well.  Includes dorm accomodations and a special SCUBA experience.

  • Venturing Days - Shooting Sports, Aquatics, and fun for a mid summer get-away for older youth.  Stay in the dorms.  Runs July 25-28.

In addition we will host our Annual Scout Safety Training Program at Rancho Alegre on the last Saturday in March and a Wilderness First Aid course (multi-day program requried of all units attending Philmont and other BSA high adventure programs).
