Covered Wagon at Camp Norse

WHOThe famous Covered Wagon event is a day event designed for Cub Scout Dens and/or Packs at beautiful Camp Norse in Kingston, MA (just outside of Plymouth, MA).

WHAT - During the course of the day Cubs will go from activity to activity with their own designed "covered wagon"  (read fancy radio flyer wagon).  Scouts and parents will work together as a team in a various games and Scout skill stations,  they will learn along the way and have a WAGON full of fun!

Scouts participating the Covered Wagon also have the opportunity to earn the Messenger of Peace award. Here's some information on the program:

Scouts are already doing great things in their community. Through good turns and community service, scouts are making the world a better place and spreading a culture of peace. The Messengers of Peace program aims to highlight this work by supporting scouts’ community service and encouraging Scouts to share their actions with others to help build a global network of service. If a scout does a service action and shares it with other, they can earn a Messengers of Peace badge. The main goal is to inspire Scouts to continue their community service or to join efforts with other scouts from around the globe. You can earn the Messengers of Peace badge in 4 steps:

  1. Inspire: Explore and research about local problems, people in action and good practices.
  2. Learn and decide: Identify your motivation and talents. Choose a field of action. Select useful knowledge, skills and ideas to apply.
  3. Do: Plan your actions, execute, monitor, evaluate and report.
  4. Share: Share what you did, your experiences, outcomes and learned lessons.

This year, we're putting a focus on "MESSENGERS OF PEACE DIMENSIONS" for the event.  We are asking every Unit who attends to collect toothbrush, toothpaste, comb or brush, or socks so they can make this event have real meaning and purpose.  This will benefit kids who are suddenly entering foster care, who will receive backpacks loaded with the items that we will contribute.  These items will be brought to Avion Cares to be included into back packs so that kids who suddenly find themselves needing foster care, can have personal items with them as they find their footing again.  We will be donating these items to the ADOPT A BACKPACK OR DUFFELBAG PROGRAM run by Avion Cares.

Additionally, we're going to ask that all units pack out any trash and maybe even police the trails a little bit, and pack out their trash and recycling at the end of the day (apart from mess hall trash).  These two efforts will help promote peace and understanding between our Scouts and Scouters and our community and environment.  Please work with your Units to bring your donations, and be prepared to bring out your trash and recycling.
