Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training (IOLS) (S11) and Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos (OWL) (C33)
Course Description
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training is designed to help leaders teach their Boy Scouts how to teaching camping skills to other Scouts. The training provides a "hands-on" EDGE methodology for the outdoor skills needed to provide a memorable camping experience. Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right.
Attendees
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.
What to bring
The 10 Plus Essentials for a Boy Scout are the following, so please review this list and choose and bring accordingly:
- Day Pack
- Pocketknife
- First Aid Kit
- Extra clothing
- Rain gear
- 2 Water bottles
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Trail food
- Matches / fire starters
- Sun protection - Hat, Sunscreen
- Map and compass, signal mirror, whistle
- Notebook, paper, pen, pencil, etc.
- Full sized Trash Bag (Emergency Shelter)
- Ground cloth / tarp
- Extra clothing / winter gear (Remember that cotton gets wet. Dress for the weather. Wool for really cold weather or modern synthetics with a poly layer for medium cold weather.)
- Comfortable, warm boots with good warm socks (no cotton), and extra warm socks
- Coat, sweaters, fleece jackets (layering is good)
- Sleeping bag, pad and pillow
- Sleeping cot is another comfort you may wish to have
- NOTE: Expect Snow, especially this year
Clean-up Kit
- Soap, washcloth, towel, comb, "wipies"
- Tooth brush, paste and dental floss
Personal Extras
- Remember that comfy camp chair
- Beverage Mug
- Personal Snacks
- Watch
- Wool Hat / Gloves
- Camera
You will need to bring your own tent to camp. "Be Prepared" for cold weather and wind regardless of the forecast with winter appropriate footwear, clothing and equipment, e.g. no athletic shoes, summer season tents, cotton clothing, etc.

$25.00; your registration fee covers; food, camping fees, and administrative costs.
