The College of Commissioner Science (CCS) is offering a series of professional educational workshops that will feature diverse hands-on techniques that will enable the participants to fully understand some “best practices” involved in adult volunteer training. The overall outcome of the series of courses is that the participants will become competent, comfortable, and equipped with the latest ‘tools” designed to heighten their knowledge base.

The following sessions are an “extension” offering of the College of Commissioner Science, and are being offered to all commissioners (Unit, District and Council) in the Las Vegas Area Council, whether they are in the bachelor, master, and doctorate programs, and also to those scout leaders not currently in the CCS programs at all.  The sessions will be open to all committee members (pack, troop, varsity, or venturing).

The six 5-hours sessions will be offered monthly, on Saturday mornings at the Donald W. Reynolds Scouting Resource Center – 7220 S. Paradise Rd. Las Vegas, NV 89119.  You may attend any course or all six.  Check-in for the courses begin at 8:00 am with the sessions going from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm.  There is no cost to attend the courses.

Course Description

Mentoring

The last session in the series is a culmination of all of the talents learned and gained in the first four sessions of the series.   Mentoring is described as a person, who has traveled ahead on a career path, and is willing to share experiences with a person just beginning the journey.   Mentoring calls for high level skills in listening, questioning, challenging, and advising. The BSA is a complex operation. Its leaders have to know how to motivate a great number of volunteers, set realistic goals, and find their way through a complicated set of BSA regulations and policies.    A mentors’ best advice early in the relationship helps a protégé learn what is important, and what takes priority.   The ability to not be the “sage on the stage, but the guide on the side” is what mentoring seeks to achieve.
