Backpacking for Beginners - The Hike

This Training is for any adult interested in getting started OR improving their backpacking skills.  This is an adult oriented experience.  This is all about getting started on the right path, so that you can go back to your units and provide a successful backpacking program for the Scouts.  This isn't expedition planning or training, its all about how to get the Scouts to a waterfall, cave, swimming hole or other great place to camp and away from the campgrounds of America. 

This isn't about how many miles you can go, but on how you go the miles!

You Don't  need a backpack, tent, sleeping bag or pad to attend.  We can cover most all of the gear.  You DO need your own boots, clothes, and eating utensils.  A complete gear list will be provided.
 
Dates: 
The classroom sessions will begin at 7 pm at Collierville United Methodist Church, 454 West Poplar in Collierville. Enter in the West rear entrance. Each session will last about 2 hours. Must attend all 3 sessions

Class Session 1:  Tuesday, Sept 25, 2012
This is the nuts and bolts session:  Planning a hike, evaluating the hikers, reading the weather, what you need to know to be safe and successful.

Class Session 2:  Tuesday October 2, 2012
This is the gear session.  Packs, boots, sleeping bags, tents/shelters, stoves, cloths
and more. We will do a pack “shakedown” at this session.

The HIKE: October 5-7, 2012
We put it all together.  LNT, carrying your pack, cooking, selecting a camp site, pace, first aid, on the trail decision making and much more!

The Hike will be on the Sylamore Creek Trail near Mountain Home, AR

Cost:  Only $45 per person 
Includes ALL materials, food and transportation to and from the hike.
