The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Chooses Doubleknot for its Education Programs
EDGEWATER, MD – The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) (www.serc.si.edu), a unit of the Smithsonian Institution (www.si.edu), has selected Doubleknot (www.doubleknot.com), a leading provider of software and services to non-profit organizations, as its online registration provider for all its education programming, including K-12 classes, summer camps, and Scout Merit badges. In addition, SERC plans to use Doubleknot’s Email Marketing technology for all constituent communications such as newsletters, event announcements, reminders and alerts.
After an extensive product comparison, Doubleknot was selected by SERC based on its comprehensive solution offering and experience with other non-profit organizations.
“We needed an easy-to-use, cost-effective solution for online registration,” says Jane Holly, Education School Program Coordinator for SERC. “Like all non-profits, and especially since we are publically funded, we were quite sensitive to costs,” continued Holly.
SERC members and the public will be able to register for camps, classes, seminars, lectures, home-school programs and other events via a secure payment gateway. Additionally the tool suite provides features for collecting add-on revenue, maintaining wait lists, managing payment schedules, and producing administrative and classroom reports.
“We are very pleased to be selected by such a highly regarded public institution as the Smithsonian. It affirms our belief that providing highly vertical applications for focused industries is what the non-profit market wants,” stated John Rees, President of Doubleknot. “Our applications are both wide-ranging and vastly configurable, which gives SERC’s staff the online tools necessary to meet all their registration needs, both now and in the future.”
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is the leading national research center for understanding environmental issues in the coastal zone. The world’s coastal zones are home to more than 60 percent of the global population and subject to intensive activity. A diverse staff of senior scientists engages in interdisciplinary studies that address issues such as global change, watershed studies, maintenance of productive fisheries, changes in our environment from biological invaders, and understanding fragile wetlands and woodlands. Education and outreach are major components of SERC’s mission, offering opportunities for people of all ages to learn about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay area and to increase their appreciation of the environment.
