White Stag National Youth Leadership Training
Narragansett Council, BSA
10 Risho Avenue
East Providence, RI 02914-0777
Dear Scoutmaster:
The greatest resource of your Boy Scout Troop is youth leadership. You have the opportunity to recommend and encourage outstanding Scouts from your Troop to attend Narragansett Council’s National Youth Leadership Training Conference. This program will serve 64 participants and will be held over the course of two weekends from Saturday, August 16 to Monday, August 18 and from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24 at Champlin Scout Reservation, Cranston, RI. Both weekends are mandatory for the completion of the program.
Tradition has named this conference White Stag in Narragansett Council. The goal of White Stag is to help troops flourish by increasing the knowledge, skill, confidence and effectiveness of our youth leaders. Throughout the six-day, two-weekend program, team-building skills are explained, demonstrated and modeled by White Stag staff. The course material is delivered in an outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of the skill by the participants. The atmosphere of White Stag is designed to be friendly and safe with an abundance of hands-on activities. Participants are enabled with a toolbox of leadership skills to take back to their home troops.
The course is staffed with a full contingent of talented, fun-loving Scouts who are graduates of the program. The staff also includes trained adults who will allow the boys to lead, who will themselves lead by example, and who will share in the fun of the Scouts and the program.
What should you do to send a Scout to White Stag? First, each candidate must meet the eligibility requirements of being at least 13 years old and have attained the rank of First Class by May 9, 2008, and have completed the 7th grade by June 2008. Additionally, he should hold a major Troop leadership position, such as senior patrol leader or assistant senior patrol leader, or be a candidate for a position in the near future. Second, once each Troop selects its candidates, the troop can register their selections on the new White Stag NYLT webpage off the Narragansett Council, BSA website at www.narragansettbsa.org under the “Training” tab. There will be a link for online registration. Each troop may submit a maximum of 2 Scouts to attend White Stag. Additional candidates can be placed on the “Waiting List” in the event that space opens for the conference by utilizing the “Waiting List” registration link.
The fee of the conference is $185.00 per scout payable on or before May 9, 2008 [after May 9 the Conference cost goes up to $235.00] at the time of the online registration. Once the online registration is completed, the last step is to print out the registration receipt and have the Scoutmaster, Committee Chair, Parent, and Scout sign on the appropriate lines. The signed receipt will then need to be sent to the Narragansett Council Administration Office. The last day to register for the course is May 16, 2008. On May 17, 2008, Scouts from the Waiting List will be invited to fill any vacancies on a first paid basis, with priority given to Scouts from Troops that do not already have one Scout registered. Once every Troop has had the opportunity to include their 1st choice from the waiting list, the waiting list will again be cycled with the 2nd choice based again on a first-paid basis until all spaces are filled. The final roster cut-off date is Friday, June 20. No Scouts’ name will go on the list of participants until the completed application and full payment is received!
Payment details and attendance requirements are outlined on the White Stag webpage along with additional conference information. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact Chris Schuler at cschuler@narragansettbsa.org.
Thank you for your consideration and support of the White Stag National Youth Leadership Training program. I look forward to meeting the Scouts from your Troop!
Yours in Scouting.
Sincerely,
Paul
