The council is offering a class for NRA certification as a Range Safety Officer on Saturday, July 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The class will be held at Camp Tamarancho. Cost to cover the training materials is $20.00. Bring your own lunch and snacks.
It is a requirement when shooting pellet or .22 caliber rifles on the BSA rifle ranges that there be a minimum of two certified adults to oversee the shooting operations. One must be a NRA Range Safety Officer and the other must be a NRA Rifle Instructor.
The responsibility of the RSO is to oversee the safety aspects of the shooting operations while the instructor concentrates on teaching shooting skills.
The Marin Council Shooting Sports Committee provides opportunities for Scouts to learn safe handling techniques of rifles while enjoying shooting at targets. In order to operate the ranges and provide these learning opportunities, we need certified RSO staff. If more staff are available, we can schedule more shooting opportunities.
An NRA Rifle Instructor class is more extensive and will be taught at a later date.
