The University of Scouting Supplemental Training

The University of Scouting is for all Scouting volunteers: Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders, Varsity Scout Leaders, Venturing Scout Leaders as well as Commissioners and district volunteers. Den Chief Training will also be offered to Boy Scouts who have pre-registered. 

Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the College of Southern Nevada – Cheyenne Campus is the location of the University of Scouting,3200 East Cheyenne Ave North Las Vegas, NV 89030 . Watch for the signage at the west entrance of the College.  Over 100 courses will be offered for all levels of Scouting, including the College of Commissioner Science for commissioners. Camp Cards - Unit Fundraiser


Camp Cards are a discount card designed to help Scouts earn their way to summer and day camps. Units participating in this program will earn 50% commission ($2.50) on each $5.00 Camp Card they sell between February 19th - May 30th.

Your unit can still sign up and sell camps cards.  If you need to pick up more cards, bring 50% of your card sales to the Donald W Reynolds Scouting Resource Center with the report with the boy's names that have sold the cards.  Camp Card Turn-in Sheet in fill-able pdf format.  Remember April 16th is the deadline for all money and Camp Card Turn-in sheets to be turned in for eligibility for prizes and free Las Vegas Area Council camps.

Your unit can continue to sell Camp Cards until May 30th and receive the 50% commission.  See the Camp Card Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Fundraiser to benefit Scoutreach    Online payment and Sponsorship

Friday, March 28, 2014 7:30 a.m.. - 9:00 a.m..  Stratosphere Hotel, Casino & Tower and the Las Vegas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America are teaming up to benefit youth served through the Scoutreach program. Each participant can experience the thrill of SkyJump Las Vegas while raising funds for Scouting by collecting a minimum of $855 in pledges; $1 for every foot above the Las Vegas Strip.

At 855 feet above the Las Vegas Strip, SkyJump Las Vegas is the world’s tallest SkyJump attraction. Riders are suited-up in custom jump suits and connected to an incredibly safe high speed “descender” machine where they will literally leap off the platform and descend to the landing pad below. Jump in and experience the ultimate thrill while providing a Scouting adventure that will last a lifetime.

Mega Scout Expo

TIP:  To add or change a registration on Doubleknot (the system we use for online registrations), be sure to use the Prompt under the Register Button. To edit an existing registration click here .  If you click on Register, you are making a completely new registration and will be charged accordingly.  If you are adding more campers use the "To edit...." prompt, if you are changing or adding more merit badges for a youth, use the "To Edit ..." prompt, etc. 

Food will be available all three days at the 2014 Mega Scout Expo.  You can pre-purchase a meal ticket at the Council Trading Post.  The cost per ticket is $5, which covers one meal.  Tickets are not-refundable.

The 2014 Mega Scout Expo will be held at Tule Springs at Floyd Lamb Park on April 25-27, 2014. The 2014 theme is "One Oath, One Law." To Register for Merit Badge Midway, Click Here    But first check what is available and the Pre-requisites for each merit badge?  Click here for that information. Click on Details to see what classes are still available.  The Merit Badge fees for the early registration discount ($5 to $10 per class). The Early Bird deadline to register online is March 31st.   Online registration will continue to be available until midnight on April 19th but class prices will not be discounted ($10 to $20 per class).  The fee at the door will be $25-$30 depending on the merit badge.  For more information please see the Merit Badge Midway Frequently Asked Questions.

Council Annual Dinner -- Medal of Merit Awarded

The Council Annual Dinner was held Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino. Over 330 spouses and family members attended this annual event.  The Boy Scout Medal of Merit was presented to Christina Mootz for her organization and coordination of the search for William Mootz. Medal of Merit is awarded to a youth or an adult who has performed some outstanding act of service.  There have only been 6,229 Medals of Merit awarded since its inception in 1945.

Scouter's Cup - Ski Event Fundraiser

The Scouter’s Cup Ski Challenge concluded a very successful two –day event with more ski teams registered than last year and more money raised at the silent auction and our buy-an-Olympian auction.  Friday’s slalom event was snowy and wet as our intrepid skiers battled some pretty heavy snow and rain conditions.  A good time was had by all as they realized that the entire event was to help support the Council’s nearly 20,000 youth!  A big thank you goes out to Steve Fellows and Kenny Bott, event co-chairs for their planning and leadership.   See you next year on the slopes!

Arsensal Sporting Clays and Scout Steel Challenge

The Sporting Clays and Scout Steel Challenge is being renamed the Arsenal Sporting Clays and Scout Steel Challenge!  We are excited to announce a new partnership with Arsenal Inc. and K-Var that will help us elevate our event to a new high and result in a greater opportunity to assist more Scouts as they progress through our programs.  This year’s event will be held on April 11 & 12 with our auction and reception taking place again at Carter Powersports just off of the 215 and Decatur Friday night at 6:30 pm.  Regardless of whether you’re planning to shoot with us on Saturday anyone with an interest in bidding on some of our fabulous auction items is welcome.  Bring your checkbook, credit card or cash money and join us Friday night.  Saturday’s shoot will be held at Pro Gun Club out on the Boulder Highway east of town.  We have some spectacular fun events planned and our sporting clays shoot will test shooters of all abilities.  For more information contact Randy Andreasen at 702-968-8153.

Good Scout Luncheon

The annual Good Scout luncheon will honor current Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and her husband and former Mayor Oscar Goodman.  The date for the luncheon is May 8th and will be held at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas.  Table sponsors are being sought for the event to tell your business associates and friends.  Contact Randy Andreasen for more information at randy.andreasen@scouting.org.

Scout Night with the Las Vegas 51's  May 10th 7:05pm 

It is Folding Chair giveaway night.  For just $10, you get a reserved ticket, a Las Vegas 51s hat, Folding Chair giveaway (while supplies last), $3 of every ticket sold goes to the Las Vegas Area Council, 51s Patch!  Tickets will be on sale at the Trading Post starting 3/12/2014.  All tickets need to be purchased in advance. 

Summer Camp Staff Opportunities For Las Vegas Area Council Summer Camps

Applications are now being accepted for positions on the camp staffs at Kimball Scout Reservation and Del Webb Adventure Base for 14-15 for unpaid counselor-in-training positions. Staffing a summer camp builds leadership experience and a lifetime of memories. Pass this information on to anyone who might be interested in the opportunity. Download application form here.

2014 Cub Scout Day Camp -- Cub Jungle of Fun

Calling all Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Cub Scouts. Plan to attend a Council Sponsored Day Camp this summer. Day camps run from the first of March thru the Middle of August. The camp times vary depending on camp but most camps are twilight camps that run from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Pick a date or location that works for your Den or Pack and plan on having fun! Day Camps can not happen with adult support so if you are interested in helping, select the camp and call the Camp Director to volunteer. 57th Annual  Jamboree on the Air  October 18, 2014 from 9:00am to 3:00pm

Training

Wood Badge Adult Leader Training -- May 1-3 and May 15-17, 2014

Wood Badge is leadership training for all Scout leaders involved in the Scout programs of the Boy Scouts of America: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing as well as council and district leaders and professionals.

The Las Vegas Area Council 2014 course is a two weekend course to be held at Kimball Scout Reservation on May 1-3 and May 15-17, 2014. The course fee is $240. If you are paid in full by March 15, 2014, the Wood Badge Association will pay $40 of the $240 fee. Online Registration. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) - June 10-14, 2014

Registration now open. An exciting, action-packed program provides youth with leadership skills and experience they can use in their units and in other situations. Key concepts focus on what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO, and are taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Silverado District is hosting this training. The training is being held at Boulder Beach Camp Ground. The cost is $20 per person. Registration Deadline is Friday March 14. Philmont 2015 

Las Vegas Area Council has slots for two crews arriving Philmont June 8, 2015 and leaving June 20, 2015.  Each Crew is 10 people.  The total cost is $860.  If you are interested, the first payment of $100 is due by May 1, 2014 to Philmont.  The next payment is $382.50 due October 1 and the last payment of $382.50 is due by March 1, 2015.  If your unit is interested in attending Philmont in 2014, please contact Donna Sword at donna.sword@scouting.org
