Camp Card Unit Fundraiser and 2014 Mega Scout Expo Kick-off

The Camp Card training and kick-off is scheduled for Wednesday February 19th at the Donald W. Reynolds Scouting Resource Center. The event will start at 6:00 pm.  Your unit Camp Card Coordinator or designee should plan on attending to pick up cards and other information.

Camp Cards - Unit Fundraiser

Camp Cards are a discount card designed to help Scouts earn their way to summer and day camps. Units participating in this program will earn 50% commission ($2.50) on each $5.00 Camp Card they sell between February 19 - May 30. 

Online registration ends on  February 17th for Camp Card Registration.  You will be able to register at the door on the 19th to sell camp cards! 

Mega Scout Expo 

The 2014 Mega Scout Expo will be held at Tule Springs at Floyd Lamb Park on April 25-27, 2014. The 2014 theme is "One Oath, One Law." Council Annual Dinner

The Council Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 6:30 pm at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino.  The highlight of the dinner will be the presentation of the Silver Beaver Award to 19 noteworthy volunteers of the Las Vegas Area Council.  The Silver Beaver Award is the highest council recognition awarded to registered adult volunteers for distinguished service to youth.  Additional awards will also be presented that evening.

The University of Scouting Supplemental Training

The University of Scouting is for all Scouting volunteers:  Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders, Varsity Scout Leaders, Venturing Scout Leaders as well as Commissioners and district volunteers.  Den Chief Training will also be offered to Boy Scouts.

Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the College of Southern Nevada – Cheyenne Campus is the location of the University of Scouting.  Over 100 courses will be offered for all levels of Scouting, including the College of Commissioner Science for commissioners.

Scouter's Cup - Ski Event Fundraiser

Sky Jump for Scouting - Fundraiser to benefit Scoutreach

Friday, March 28, 2014  7:30 a.m.. - 9:00 a.m..

Stratosphere Hotel, Casino & Tower and the Las Vegas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America are teaming up to benefit youth served through the Scoutreach program. Each participant can experience the thrill of SkyJump Las Vegas while raising funds for Scouting by collecting a minimum of $855 in pledges; $1 for every foot above the Las Vegas Strip.

At 855 feet above the Las Vegas Strip, SkyJump Las Vegas is the world’s tallest SkyJump attraction.  Riders are suited-up in custom jump suits and connected to an incredibly safe high speed “descender” machine where they will literally leap off the platform and descend to the landing pad below. Jump in and experience the ultimate thrill while providing a Scouting adventure that will last a lifetime.

Sporting Clays and Scout Steel Challenge 

The Las Vegas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America will hold its 7th annual Las Vegas Sporting Clays and Scout Steel Challenge, April 11 & 12, 2014.  The purpose of this event is to help benefit nearly 20,000 area youth involved in scouting and its programs.  For more information see our linked Brochure and or contract Randy Andreasen at 702-968-8153.

Summer Camp Staff Opportunities For Las Vegas Area Council Summer Camps

Applications are now being accepted for positions on the camp staffs at Kimball Scout Reservation and Del Webb Adventure Base. We're looking for motivated and confident Scouts and Venturers age 16 and older for paid staff positions and ages 14-15 for unpaid counselor-in-training positions. Staffing a summer camp builds leadership experience and a lifetime of memories. Pass this information on to anyone who might be interested in the opportunity. Download application form here.

2014 Cub Scout Day Camp  -- Cub Jungle of Fun

Calling all Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Cub Scouts.  Plan to attend a Council Sponsored Day Camp this summer.  Day camps run from the first of March thru the Middle of August. The camp times vary depending on camp but most camps are twilight camps that run from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Pick a date or location that works for your Den or Pack and plan on having fun!   Day Camps can not happen with adult support so if you are interested in helping, select the camp and call the Camp Director to volunteer.   Schedules, information, registration forms and contact information located in this brochure!

Training

Wood Badge Adult Leader Training -- May 1-3 and May 15-17, 2014 

Wood Badge is leadership training for all Scout leaders involved in the Scout programs of the Boy Scouts of America: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing as well as council and district leaders and professionals.

The Las Vegas Area Council 2014 course is a two weekend course to be held at Kimball Scout Reservation on May 1-3 and May 15-17, 2014.  The course fee is $240.  If you are paid in full by March 15, 2014, the Wood Badge Association will pay $40 of the $240 fee.  Online Registration.  For more information, please contact Paul McPhee at lvwoodbadge2014@gmail.com.

 

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) - June 10-14, 2014

Registration now open. An exciting, action-packed program provides youth with leadership skills and experience they can use in their units and in other situations. Key concepts focus on what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO, and are taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership. Scout Leader Outdoor Training -- Friday-Saturday February 21-22, 2014

The Bighorn District is hosting Scout Leader Outdoor Training in February.  The fee for the training is $20 if paid by February 14th and $25 after February 15th.  Boy Scout Leaders and Varsity Scout Leaders need to complete this training as well as the indoor leader specific training to be considered trained.  Contact Debra Salls for more information at mdsalls@aol.com

Scout Leader Outdoor Training -- Friday and Saturday March 28-29, 2014

Silverado District is hosting this training.  The training is being held at Boulder Beach Camp Ground.  The cost is $20 per person.  Registration Deadline is Friday March 14.  This class in intended for the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Varsity Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach.  The course is from  6:30 pm Friday - 4:00 pm Saturday.  Please come with the following: Uniform, tent, sleeping bag, camping chair, pen, paper, Mess Kit, and all personal affects.   Please eat Friday prior to arrival.  Breakfast and Lunch on Saturday will be provided.  For more information, please contact Scout Kirklin at 610-320-3277 or sdkirklin@yahoo.com

2014 Climbing and Rappelling Instructor Seminar  - must attend all sessions

Any Registered Scout Adult Leader 18 years or older may attend this class.  The class is limited to the first 12 participants.  The cost is $65 per person which includes the BSA Climbing/Rappelling Manual Topping Out. You need to register at the Trading Post and pick up material. See Registration Form for all the dates and other requirements.

 Purpose: To give some basics in safe climbing and rappelling. To insure leaders have proper training prior to a unit activity of this nature. To complete the BSA “Climb on Safely” requirement. Must be willing to work with other units for Climb & Rappel activities for 3 years, and help train new instructors during future seminars.

Note: BSA now requires a minimum of two (2) climbing instructors at any unit, district, or council climbing or rappelling activity.

Play it Safe

Empower your Cub Scout Pack or Boy Scout Troop with Play it Safe.  Play it Safe is a fun, interactive, age appropriate method that teaches children to respond appropriately to unique challenges they must face such as bullies, inappropriate behavior, stranger awareness and abduction defense.  This event is March 1 from 1:00 pm to : pm.  The cost is $15 per Cub/Boy Scout (patch is included in the cost.)  More information and registration form.

Merit Badges and First Aid offered at the Municipal Pools

Class schedules are now out for Swimming, Lifesaving, and First Aid.  You may contact Erin Clark at 702-229-6309 or you can sign up at recreation.lasvegasnevda.gov.  Classes are offered at the Municipal Pool and at Pavilion Pool.  Brochure.  All staff are BSA registered merit badge counselors.
