Year 2013, No. 21  --  December 5, 2013

Dear Scouting Friend,

A gift to support Scouting may be the most rewarding gift you give this year. The good character that our young people develop through Scouting carry over to every area of their lives as they become adults. This is where your support will go if you make a gift to Scouting during this season of giving. It is our belief that every youth deserves a chance to be a Scout and enjoy the same great, personal rewards that those involved in the program have been so fortunate to realize.

With a little less than a month left in 2013 and this week we marked Giving Tuesday please join us in helping the young people in our communities this holiday season by clicking here. This is truly the gift that keeps on giving as it provides a greater future for our youth and our community. For gifts made online in December we will add a new ornament to our Holiday Display, every dollar raised allows us to continue to serve the youth of the Central Coast.

If you feel strongly about the values provided by the Scouting program, please feel free to share this same email with your friends and family, and ask them to make the same commitment to the youth in the Los Padres Council.

Thank you for your commitment to Scouting.

We wish you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season!

Prefer to donate by mail? Please send a check to the Los Padres Council, Boy Scouts of America,4000 Modoc Road, Santa Barbara,CA 931010. For any questions, please call Rebecca Fields at (805) 967-0105. And to learn more about our programs, please visit

On Line Charter Renewal Open

All units should have received their 2014 Charter Renewal Package by now. If they have not received the package, they should contact their Unit Commissioner or in the absence of a Unit Commissioner, their District Commissioner and/or District Executive as soon as possible.

In addition to the paperwork and instructions necessary for completing the renewal and Journey to Excellence Process are some great handouts with dates of upcoming events and information about safety in Scouting. Remember that all charter renewals are due in early December. For more information about the process and the increase in the registration fee for 2014, to our special webpage.

Congratulations to all those units that have completed their online re-chartering packets and submitted the paperwork and fees to your District Executive.

Wilderness First Aid Course in April

The Los Padres Council is pleased to once again offer a Wilderness First Aid Course. This course is now required for all units that attend one of the National High Adventure Base Programs (Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier). It is also a great course to take for all units that are going on a backcountry trip this summer and beyond.

Wilderness First Aid is invaluable to you, the unit or trek leader, as it goes well beyond your basic first aid. When you are hours from available emergency medical services, you will be really thankful that you took this course! This course is 18 hours in length, but invaluable in the resources you will learn to use.

The course will be held at Rancho Alegre on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 3 PM to 10 PM and Saturday, April 5, 2014, from 8 AM to 9 PM. Yes, these are long hours, but will not impact your Sunday obligations. You will stay overnight at Rancho Alegre (in our dorms, so just bring sleeping bag and personal gear), have dinner on Friday evening, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday. Note corrected dates.

A pre-requisite for the course is current (within the past two years) certification in Adult CPR and AED (automatic external defibrillator).  You will need to bring a copy of your card to the course. Not currently certified? No problem – we will be offering CPR and AED beginning at 12 Noon on Friday

Costs for the Wilderness First Aid course: Los Padres Council Scouters $160 per person; Non Los Padres Council Scouters:  $175; Non-scout community members $200. Costs include the course, course materials, certification card, lodging and meals. (Thanks to a grant from our National Office, we are able to offer this course at this greatly reduced price.) PLEASE NOTE THE MINIMUM AGE FOR THE COURSE IS 16.

There is an additional cost for the CPR/AED training:  Los Padres Council Scouters $45 per person; Non Los Padres Council Scouters $55; Non-Scout community members $60.

You must attend all course sessions and participate fully - this is a physically demanding course. You must pass the final exam with a score of 80% or better.

To sign up go to the council website, and click on the link to the Wilderness First Aid Course.  For more information contact Ron Walsh at 686-5167 or or e-mail George Brown at

Looking for New Pictures for our Website

Many of the pictures we use at the top of the home pages of our Council and District web pages have been there for over two years. We are looking for some new action shots of Scouts doing service to the community. Pictures should be in a horizontal format and should show the best features of our youth in action. Please send your photos in digital format to the webmaster at

Eagle Court of Honor Resources

We received a suggestion that our website should list contact information for the different community agencies which want to recognize Eagle Scouts at their Court of Honor. We ask that units submit names and contact information for these resources in their area. In addition, we will offer a template for issuing a news release on this page. Please send your response to this plea to the webmaster at

Get Trained!

Successful IOLS Course Held

Many thanks to Joe Bauer and staff for putting on another successful combined Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) and Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (IOLS-WL) course on November 23-24 at Rancho Alegre.

We have some great training coming up! Here is a list with a few comments. See the links on the LPC calendar for more information.

Jan 11 - The Fundamentals of Training: Almost all scouters make presentations and/or present training material. This is a Saturday morning training course that provides training on the basics. This course can be followed by the Trainer’s EDGE course as more advanced skills are developed.

Aug 30-Sep 1 and Sep 19-21  Wood Badge: This is the premier leadership training course for scouters. It helps scouters in all phases of their life, as they learn through hands-on experience how to be better leaders and followers. Highly recommended! This course is scheduled to require only one day off of work for those that work Monday through Friday.

Do you have any questions or requests regarding training? Please contact Brad Ross, the Council Training Chair, at We would like to implement High Adventure Training in the council – please contact Brad if you are interested in helping put the courses together and staff the training. It’s great to be a trainer because you are learning along with the participants, and helping them to help the scouts.
